Delusions of being finished

Ron put five(!) coats of primer on Ylisande yesterday. We agreed that some of the parts should be ready to start molding tomorrow, and others would need more sanding and primering. I just went over all the parts and there isn't A SINGLE ONE that doesn't need more sanding in spots. Some parts are looking very good, but Aaarglrowfsdnxcdsvdskfbs!!!!! Bloody ephemeral surface imperfections!!! I want to start molding.. because I have some new ideas for how to improve on what we did last time, and I am also scared to start molding, and potentially make mistakes and waste expensive materials, so I kinda want to jump over that hurdle and get a couple of molds made so I can feel better about it.

I am definitely going to run a test cast of the SmoothOn resin today and see if it will work with the Polytek pigments. That should make me feel better... if it works.

ETA: Well the good news is that Polytek Polydyes are compatible with SmoothOn resin (and it should be considering SoStrong tines work with Polytek resin!!) so I won't have to fork out more money on a separate set of pigments from SO. On the other hand there is some compatibility issues, I have heard, with SmoothOn and Alumilite.

On a completely different note, I have cut a dark-tan junk piece in half, chucked one part in the drawer and left one on the windowsill. Will glue them back together in a few days or weeks... see if she goes green or anything.

And I've done the sanding of all the parts.. the faults that I could see clearly in the morning light were not really visible in the afternoon light, so it's lucky I had marked them all with a pencil. Ron should have a few days off after Tuesday so we can prime again. Some parts only had a tiny spot here or there but I didn't want to leave those on.. it's starting to look really good. Fingers crossed and maybe I shouldn't even jinx myself by talking about it anymore, just make an announcement when I can mold ~ I have already promised Armeleia I will take some pictures of the mold making process to show how I do it.

You better stick to that promise, too! :P

I'm sorry to hear that you found more imperfections... but hey, it's so much better to have found them now! I think you'll be fine with the moldmaking, so stop worrying so much. You know what you're doing. And besides, it's meant to be!

Re: compatibility between the Alumilite and Smooth-on, you can use the Alumilite pigment in the Smooth on, but not the reverse. (Or so was my experience.) The Alumilite resin frothed up something fierce when I used a drop of the So-Strong in it. By comparison, though, the Alumilite pigment didn't seem very potent in the Smooth-on resin I was using. (LOL, I also used some Castin' Craft pigment just to see what would happen... it didn't cause any problems, but it didn't really add much color either...)

Aimee, I think the problem with Alumilite is that they label their components in reverse.. A is B and B is A, where all the other products label the prepolymer as B and the curative as A. And the curative is really moisture sensitive, thus reacts with the pigments. That's my theory anyway.

And yes I will be taking pictures.. do remind me though.

its so cool that Ron works with you on this... it seems so much better to have a 2nd head looking at some of these things - but it sounds like you are really good at seeing the imperfections yourself!

I seem to focus so hard on spot A that I don't notice a huge ugly mar in spot B, until someone else looks at it and asks what I was thinking....

more pictures yet? she is so awesome....

hmmm - and i'm jealous over everyone having their avatars, guess i need to go see if i can make one....

Sorry Pat, no new pictures yet. Ron decided to work for money an extra couple of days but is supposed to have tomorrow off so we can re-coat. I don't think there will be any more pics until I start molding because there's just nothing new to see.

Ron is good with the paintgun, and I pass him the parts and put them back so we get a good workflow. He knows what he is doing but I usually spot the flaws because when he's not around. It's definitely good to have a second pair of eyes and someone who is slightly less subjective than me.. although he can't tell the difference between my sculpt and any other female (or male) bodies...?!

I've had good results with the smooth on colors in the alumilite... but the first time I did it... it went all weird. No idea why, but the first time it didn't set up proper and was all... rubbery...
